“Walking is good for solving problems it’s like the feet are little psychiatrists.” – Pepper Giardino
Good morning , meditation done.
Quote for the Day:
“Walking is good for solving problems – it’s like the feet are little psychiatrists.”
Recently it has been a pretty stressful but exciting time, crunching numbers, finalising architectural designs, recruiting an MD, negotiations around my business and being in constant pain whilst recovering from my injury.
Add to this being unable to teach and practice yoga properly and supporting a very close friend through a particularly traumatic divorce, anyone who knows the estranged husband would not expect anything less and it is understandable where all the stress is coming from.
Not being able to do my regular full yoga practice has meant walking my dogs on the beach has been my only saving grace. Because of my injury I cannot do my favourite walk up the 100 steps to the top of the South Sutors and my prized spot on the bench near the top, where I can watch the dolphins playing in the Cromarty Firth.
I am hoping when I see the physiotherapist this afternoon that he says I am getting strong enough to be able to resume my favourite walk up the South Sutors, but judging by how much pain I am this week and the extent of my limp whilst I am walking I very much doubt it.
So I have been enjoying walking along the beach outside my mothers house turning left away from the village, where I don’t pass a sole and get to unwind and de clutter my mind of any problems and stress as I enjoy the solitude and quality of the time of just me and my trusted hounds, Hungarian Vizslas Zeus and Zorro.
It really is my favourite and most treasured time of the day and my mood and spirit lifts with every step I take and I always seem to find the answer to any problems that have been bothering me.
Yesterday’s walk did not disappoint it was an amazing day the sun was shining, the sky was blue with not a ripple in the water or a cloud in the sky. It was incredible weather for February up in the Highlands.
Walking is the most natural way to increase energy, reduce stress and maintain joint health and flexibility. Walking strengthens the muscles. That helps shift pressure from joints and reduce pain. Repeated walking compresses and releases knee cartilage helping to nourish joints and stave off deterioration. Along with my rehabilitation exercises I have been told to try and walk a little bit further each day, but as soon as I do anything that aggravates the pain I have to back off.
The only other time I seem to find the answer to solving problems is when I practice yoga. My mind is focused on my breathing and the position I am trying to get in and then I have to hold the position for five breaths, I start counting inside my head,
“Inhale 1, 2, 3, 4 exhale 1, 2, 3, 4 one. Inhale 1, 2, 3, 4 exhale 1, 2, 3, 4 two ……”
And then suddenly an idea or solution comes into my head, I think to myself I must remember this when I finish class and then get back to my counting.
I have practiced yoga and meditation everyday for the last 10 years, which has really helped me in all aspects of my life and not just my health.
The more I exercise and practice the stronger my breathing becomes and the more control of it I have.
The yoga poses and breathing teach me that if I control my breath I can control my mind. The pain and discomfort I feel in the awkward yoga poses, will go away if I breathe and stay calm. This mirrors situations in life which can seem impossible with no way out, but if you stay calm, focused and breathe then your head clears, the situation does not seem as bad as you first thought and you can see a way forward.
This is the basis of my Elysium Way Training System.
The Elysium Way enhances and enriches lives allowing you to reach your full potential physically, mentally and spiritually.
And one of the main components of the Elysium Way is practicing yoga.
